*Nurses approaching the 2-year anniversary of completing a UPMC Wolff Learning Academy Certificate of Completion are required to complete a different UPMC Wolff Learning Academy Certificate of Completion to maintain their UPMC advancement at each 2-year anniversary date.  The same program cannot be completed within 3 renewal periods (6 years).

Nurses are encouraged to advance on their My Nursing Career ladders by completing any section of coursework found on this page. At the conclusion, a certificate of completion will be awarded.

Consult your local HR representative to verify if UPMC Wolff Learning Academy Certificates of Completion can be used for advancement on your specific career ladder. 

UPMC Wolff Learning Academy Certificates of Completion are for internal UPMC advancement only and are not considered a professional or specialty certification that confers a credential. Each Certificate of Completion is valid for 2 years.

This is a self-paced, comprehensive program designed to provide UPMC staff the knowledge and skills needed to initiate and support quality initiatives within the framework of UPMC policies, practices, and expectations.

Patient Safety Essentials

This is a comprehensive program designed to provide UPMC staff (Patient Safety Specialists, Physicians, Clinicians, Leadership, nurses, etc.) the knowledge and skills needed to initiate and support improved patient safety outcomes within the framework of UPMC safety-related policies, practices, and expectations.  A Just Culture is also essential to patient safety by promoting an environment where employees and staff are encouraged to report safety events and near misses.

Quality Improvement Fundamentals

This program will lead the participant through the quality improvement (QI) process from start to finish by providing fundamental principles and practical applications of QI science to assist with any QI project. This program includes asynchronous, self-paced course completion and live, virtual workshop attendance.

Quality Education Series

This five-month course is designed for individuals with little or no prior quality improvement experience that have a quality improvement project they would like to tackle. The course combines a series of virtual classroom sessions, asynchronous coursework, and coaching calls with real-world work on a local improvement project that is centered around system-wide goals. The goal of the course is to teach students how to execute a Quality Improvement (QI) project from start to finish. QES runs annually from September to January and is by application only. Advanced Quality Education Series

The series is comprised of six didactic virtual sessions presented by outside experts and UPMC leaders, as well as collaboration with the project coach and coursework through the Wolff Learning Academy. The goal of the series is that participants will both learn how to implement successful QI projects and become the next generation of quality leaders at UPMC. It is designed for participants with quality improvement experience who desire a deeper understanding of the QI process. By application only.
