This course describes the inception of the patient safety movement and, specifically, the adoption of the MCARE act within Pennsylvania. It will also lead the learner through how MCARE influences A Just Culture, organizational safety plans, and the roles of the patient safety triad members. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and The Joint Commission are introduced for their roles in promoting patient safety. UPMC's approach to patient safety is also reviewed throughout the module.
